What is astaxanthin?
Astaxanthin belongs to the carotenoid family, the same group of pigments as beta-carotene and lutein. It has a deep red colour. Haematococcus pluvialis, a single-celled green alga, produces large amounts of it when the cells are under stress, and that alga is the source used here. One softgel contains 120 mg of broken-cell extract, equal to 240 mg of dried algae.

Why broken-cell algae?
Haematococcus cells have a tough outer wall. Breaking that wall open during processing releases the astaxanthin held inside so it can be extracted.
