What is lutein?
Lutein belongs to the carotenoid family, the yellow and orange pigments that plants make. It is found alongside its close relative zeaxanthin in leafy greens and in the petals of the marigold (Tagetes erecta), which is where the lutein and zeaxanthin in these softgels come from. In the body, both pigments collect in the macula at the centre of the retina.
