Activated charcoal supplements are typically made from either coconut shells or bamboo and are available in various forms such as capsules, tablets, and powders. These supplements are believed to work by binding to toxins and chemicals in the gut, preventing their absorption into the body. Some people use them to alleviate symptoms of digestive issues such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea.

Activated charcoal may also have other health benefits, such as improving kidney function, reducing cholesterol levels, and treating certain cases of poisoning.

It's typically recommended to take oral activated charcoal products 1-2 hours before or after a meal. Orally administered activated charcoal should also be taken with plenty of water to prevent constipation and dehydration.

If you're taking single-dose activated charcoal or multiple-dose activated charcoal for the treatment of poisoning, it's important to take it as soon as possible after exposure to the toxin, ideally within an hour. However, you should seek medical attention immediately in the event of poisoning, as activated charcoal alone may not be enough to treat serious cases.

Activated charcoal should not be taken with certain medications or supplements, as it can interfere with their absorption and effectiveness. To avoid interactions, it's recommended to wait at least 2 hours before or after taking other medications or supplements when taking activated charcoal.

Some potential side effects of taking activated charcoal may include constipation or diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, dehydration, interference with medication absorption, and staining of teeth and clothing.

Activated charcoal may support detoxification by adsorbing molecules and toxins onto its porous surface. While some studies have suggested that activated charcoal may help to remove some toxins and impurities from the body, more research is needed to fully understand its effects.
