What is alpha-lipoic acid?
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a compound that the body produces in small quantities and that sits inside the mitochondria, the parts of the cell that turn food into energy. Small amounts are also found in red meat, organ meats, spinach and broccoli. Unlike most antioxidants, ALA is soluble in both water and fat. The DL form used here contains equal parts of the R and S versions of the molecule.
